The Problem With Baggage Handlers

Hebrews 11 is one of my favorite chapters in the Bible.  In this chapter the writer lifts up several Old Testament characters as examples of faith.  He reminds us of Abraham who believed God for a son when he was nearly one hundred years old, and Noah who built an arc while the entire city ridiculed him.  On and on the writer tells us of great men and women of faith and then in the first verse of chapter 12 he says this, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.”

One of the things that stands out to me in this verse is that God has a plan (strip off the weight and run with endurance).  Notice that in order to fulfill God’s plan we need to get rid of the things that slow us down and trip us up.

God’s plan is not a life full of dependencies, addictions, and obsessions… of fear, worry, and depression.  God’s plan is a good plan.  “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” – Jeremiah 29:11

The key to experiencing the life that God has for us is to let go of the baggage… the weight that slows us down.  Many of us are hanging on to baggage filled with past failures.  We are tripped up because we can’t let go of past hurts or habits.  Or we are stuck because we won’t let go of the guilt we feel over past failures.  And then there are some who refuse to acknowledge that they even have a problem.

God has given us the tools we need to be free in all areas of our lives.  No matter what the issues there is freedom in Christ.

My challenge to you is to let go of whatever you are holding onto that is keeping you from experiencing the fullness of God’s plan for you.  Are you really happy with where your baggage has taken you?  Then lay it down and walk away.  God has something much better in store.
